A migraine is a type of headache that causes moderate to severe pain.
Migraines are intense headaches that last hours to even days. These headaches are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to sound and light.
Causes and Symptoms
Doctors don't know the exact cause of migraines but it seems that genetics and environmental factors do play a role.
Some common triggers that cause migraines are:
- Sensory Stimuli
- Changes in the environment
- Hormonal changes in women
- Skipping meals
- Change in sleep
Symptoms of migraines include:
- A headache that often begins as a dull ache and grows into throbbing pain.
- Sensitivity to light, noise, and smells
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling very warm or cold
- Pale skin
- Blurred vision
Migraine symptoms can occur in various combinations and usually last anywhere between 4 to 72 hours.
Types of Migraines
There are two types of migraine headaches.
A classic migraine is a headache that happens after or along with an aura.
An aura is a sensory disturbance which includes:
- Flashes of light or dots
- Blind spots
- Blurry vision
- Temporary vision loss
- Wavy or jagged lines
- Tingling in your hands and face
- Ringing in your ears
- Changes in smell, taste, or touch
A common migraine is one without an aura. Like the name suggests this is the most common type of migraine which accounts for 60-80% of all migraine headaches.
